REFRAMING for PTSD, DEPRESSION and ANXIETY and NEW ART WORK

Posted by SHELLEY BRUCAR

The most often-visited posts on my blog so far are the three on Reframing for Negative Thinking (May 15, May 27 and June 19, 2009).  I have always believed that these tools really work, and I hope they are working for you!  Just wanted to share that the first article in today’s NY Times Latest News was about a new program for the military to teach troops REFRAMING in order to help prevent/cope with Post Traumatic Stress, Depression and Anxiety.

And here are 2 new pieces just finished for “Midwest Meditations”, a Fiber Artists Coalition exhibit which will start at the Bloomingdale Park District Museum, July – August, 2010.  Fabric for both pieces is dyed, over-dyed, screened and discharged.

VALUES and a TRIP to LAKE GENEVA

posted by SHELLEY BRUCAR

VALUES and GOALS:  Have you been thinking about your goals?  Remember FAR – Fluid, Action-Oriented and Relevant?

To make sure your goals are Relevant (to you) we talk about Values first – what is really important to you right now?  Your goals need to follow your values or they won’t matter.  So here are some questions to think about in order to identify your values:

1.  What brings you joy?

2.  What is your life’s vision?  Dream – don’t worry about what is or is not “possible”.  What do you see yourself doing 5 -10-20 years from now?

3.  What personal qualities do you possess that you consider “gifts”?

4.  What is the source of your power, your self-esteem?

5.  What accomplishments, moments mean the most to you?

6.  Finally, think about your 80th birthday celebration.  (Use Visualization from my 3/30/09 post).  Imagine this celebration as fully as you can.  Who is there?  Who are you talking to?  People are toasting you – what do you want them to say about you/to you?  What comments make you feel best, proudest?

ARTISTIC LICENSE

posted by SHELLEY BRUCAR

Fiber Artists Coalition, a group which I am proudly part of, is planning an exhibit based on a poem about blackbirds.  I was going to pass on this one becasue I don’t do birds.  Then I came across a great photo I had taken on Calf Creek Trail in Utah of a very peaceful-looking blackbird in a birch tree with beautiful Calf Creek Falls in the background.

Suddenly, I was inspired and started playing around on the design wall.  As is typical, the finished piece is something of a departure from the photo:

Interesting Color for a Blackbird“Interesting Color for a Blackbird” by Shelley Brucar.  Hand-dyed and screened fabric, machine stitching.

That bird still looks pretty serene to me…
